Symptoms of Cognitive_Sensory Dysphagia:
1. May have minimal, unrelated speech but it is clear and understandable for short phrases
(no lip-tongue-cheek paralysis).
2. May have open mouth breathing and tongue flopping
out looking as if totally paralyzed but when given an
ice chip or two will suddenly start to chew hard with
good rotary chew and swallow.
3. Has increased oral secretions, drooling, wet
voice due to decreased frequency of reflexive,
automatic swallows.
4. Responds to most food very negatively but will take smooth sweets and ice-cream.
5. Often picks tiny food particles out of mouth
rather than swalowing- or just spits.
6. Given spoon will drop it.
7. Given sour lollipop dipped in water to moisten it,
and a few gentle tongue rubs to release the flavor,
will suddenly start to manipulate the lollipop all over
the mouth. Reflexive swallows will be noticed.
8. Given gentle assist to hold lollipop and to bring to mouth with a series of gentle prompts, will eventually
start to hold the lolipop suck and swallow appropriately.
9. Often this is enough stimulation and mouth moistening
to elicit a bit of simple conversation.
hope this helps
